How Massage Flushes Toxins

Massage doesn’t flush toxins from the body!

This is actually a myth, although it is a pretty common thing that people have heard.

The body actually flushes toxins through the Liver and the Kidneys, the body can also lose a very small amount of certain toxins through sweat.

Having said that, massage can help to stimulate the body’s natural systems of flushing toxins by stimulating the lymphatic system.

The Lymphatic system is part of your immune system & produces a number of immune cells that are responsible for fighting infections & destroying old or abnormal cells. It also collects excess fluids from your tissues & returns it to the bloodstream.

The excess fluids collected by the Lymphatic system is called Lymph & flows through the Lymphatic system in a similar way blood moves through the circulatory system. It is a waste product leftover from the mechanism the body uses to deliver nutrients to the tissues.

Eventually the Lymph reaches one of two major ducts in the chest & is deposited back into the bloodstream to start the cycle again.

As the Lymph flows through this system it will travel through the Lymph Nodes, this is where the white blood cells will fight off infections & viruses or destroy old & abnormal cells.

When the muscles are being massaged it acts as a pumping mechanism that pushes Lymph along the system at a faster rate. Think of it similar to wringing out a soapy sponge. Not only does this move the Lymph along the system quicker but it also removes any build up of excess Lymph that may be causing a blockage to the system.

The Lymphatic System

These two things basically help the body to fight off & remove infections quicker than it would otherwise. So even though massage doesn’t directly remove toxins from the body, it can help to stimulate the body’s toxin removal systems.
